Progressive rock band Makrofagi, established in 2009 in Rautalampi, Finland, will release their second LP, Musta Ovi, on the 20th of October. Previously released song Varjot will now be accompanied by another single Yön Rummut.
The present piece, also released as a music video, reveals small bits of the LP’s composition. In addition to including a chewable story, the band’s ambitious goal has been to fit their concept album with a wholly alternate world, culture and time period. Inspiration has been sought from various sources, although what it comes specifically to the nature of technology and lore, references to various mythologies, elements of animistic religions as well as the sci-fi subgenre steampunk come to the fore.
“Writing the lyrics took a considerably long time. We wanted to tell a story without explaining it too directly. Our goal was that the record would offer opportunities for the listener to unravel mysteries and figure out the chain of events for themselves. We experienced occasional setbacks when the whole did not stand out as something original in our minds or if it lacked small math puzzles,” the band’s singer Anttu Röntynen reflects the storytelling side of the album.
“This second single is an escape journey across a great ocean by the last survivors of a damnation created by hellish shadows. An ancient craft awaits at the destination, along with a possible salvation. Step to this side of the Black Door, you have been summoned, we await for your response,” Anttu Röntynen declares.
